On March 21st-22nd, MTCC-Asia, funded by EU and implemented by IMO, successfully held the annual technical seminar on Pilot Project on “uptake of ship energy efficient technologies and operations by using trim optimization” and Pilot Project on “fuel consumption data collection and reporting” in the city office in Shanghai.
The seminar was participated by over 20 professionals and advisors from MTCC-Asia’s shipping stakeholders, China Maritime Safety Administration, China Classification Society, Office of Shanghai Combined Port Management Committee, China Sea Environmental Science and Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Shipping Office of Shanghai Pudong Government, IT Technology providers and MTCC-Asia technical departments.
MTCC-Asia Head, Ruan Wei introduced the past and future work of MTCC-Asia after giving his welcome and appreciation address to all participants. In his speech, he highlighted that pilot projects are most important parts throughout all MTCC-Asia’s commitments. He also stressed that nowadays is the key time for the implementation of pilot projects as both will be completed at the end of September as scheduled.
Following the kick-off section related to the presentation of the international regulations on GHG reduction from ships, the progressive work of two pilot projects and the additional research outcome regarding the Global Real-time Monitoring System of GHG Emissions from Ships were in details demonstrated by MTCC-Asia technical officers. In particular, the draft papers of Guideline on Ship Trim Optimization and Guideline on Ship Fuel Consumption Data Collection and Reporting were shared and discussed and many invaluable oral and written comments and observations were received from participants, which provides MTCC-Asia with the excellent guidance to further upgrade both Guidelines (Two guidelines are one of key outputs of pilot projects and will be produced by April).
Participants also paid great attention to the Global Real-time Monitoring System of GHG Emissions from Ships, which is value-added outcome done by MTCC-Asia and is an online system able to estimate the real-time amounts of ship GHG emissions in the global or any tailor-made region based on the AIS data and ship’s particulars database as well as to compare the general situations of GHG emissions from all ships with the goal set in the Initial IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships.
