MTCC-Asia and Sri Lanka jointly held the Virtual Regional Ship Energy Efficiency Technology Promotion Campaign on 3rd February, 2021. The Campaign, organized by MTCC-Asia, Sri Lanka Merchant Shipping Secretariat (SLMSS), Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) and Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), was attended remotely by 30 representatives from shipping industry of China and Sri Lanka.
Prof. Jin Yongxing, the Director of MTCC-Asia Council and Honorary Chair of International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), addressed the welcome speech to representatives. He expressed his appreciation to Sri Lanka Merchant Shipping Secretariat and Sri Lanka Port Authority for their hard work to support MTCC-Asia activities by reviewing the collaboration between both sides. He also highlighted that though the world stands at a crossroad in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, the shipping industry made a great contribution in ensuring the world supply chains to function safely and effectively with contactless clearance of ships in the past one year. Through this online meeting, he hoped all the participates could learn new knowledges to enable the industry to continually adapt as new technologies came of age and could be included in the original design and operation with the objective of green ships.
Capt. Upul Peiris, the Government Ship Surveyor of SLMSS, on behalf of Sri Lanka, made a presentation related to the Ship Energy Efficiency Promotion. Before introducing the GHG strategy, maritime education and existing policies in Sri Lanka, he outlined that the transport sector in Sri Lanka is under considerable efforts to increase fuel efficiency while CO2 emission are falling in many other sectors,.
The Introduction on Fourth IMO GHG Study and Application of Global Navigation Satellite System in promoting ship energy efficiency were presented by MTCC-Asia technical officers and SMU lecturers, respectively. The Campaign was closed at the end of panel discussion.
The purpose of the Campaign is to establish a point-to-point and in-depth communication of exchange between a selected Asian country and MTCC-Asia in terms of the technical and operational views of the uptake of the ship energy efficiency.
MTCC-Asia is funded by the European Union (EU), implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and hosted by SMU.
