At 17:00 on January 1, the M/V Haigang Zhiyuan safely berthed alongside the Anni Maersk at Yangshan Deepwater Port’s Guandong Terminal. Over the next ten hours, it will refuel the Anni Maersk with 3,000 tons of methanol fuel.
This operation, conducted simultaneously with container handling, marks a significant milestone as the first synchronized "ship-to-ship" methanol bunkering for large methanol-fueled container ships at Shanghai Port in 2025. It also signifies that methanol bunkering at Yangshan Port has entered a normalized phase.
The Haigang Zhiyuan, Shanghai Port's first methanol fuel bunkering vessel, represents an innovative integration of methanol shipping and refueling technology. Equipped with 12 cargo holds and a total capacity of 16,000 cubic meters, the vessel is capable of delivering "ship-to-ship" refueling services to methanol-powered international vessels. Its design also supports simultaneous container handling, reducing turnaround times for international container ships and providing significant environmental and economic benefits for shipping companies.
According to sources, two additional methanol refueling operations are scheduled at the port later this month.Looking ahead, Shanghai Port aims to implement comprehensive support measures and optimize service mechanisms for synchronized "ship-to-ship" methanol bunkering. These efforts aim to further strengthen Shanghai Port’s comprehensive service and support capabilities, solidifying its position as a leading hub for sustainable maritime operations.
