The Train-the-Trainer Programme on Alternative Fuels for Sustainable Shipping successfully took place in Shanghai from April 14 to 18. Organized by the World Maritime University (WMU) in collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre in Asia (MTCC Asia), the program was conducted under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The groundbreaking program brought together 35 participants from maritime administrations, industry organizations, and shipping enterprises across 14 countries. Designed to equip maritime professionals with advanced training skills, the initiative focused on three key alternative fuels for shipping decarbonization: ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.
Through a dynamic blend of interactive workshops, scenario-based exercises, hands-on demonstrations, and micro-teaching sessions, participants gained the expertise needed to train both seafarers and shore-based personnel. MTCC Asia played a pivotal role by providing operational support and facilitating knowledge exchange with industry experts from China’s shipping sector.
As the IMO’s first global training program dedicated to enhancing seafarers’ competence in GHG emissions reduction, this initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable shipping. By integrating knowledge sharing, teaching methodologies, and leadership development, the program ensures maritime professionals are well-prepared to drive the industry’s transition to clean energy.
The program not only accelerates knowledge transfer and international cooperation but also strengthens the talent pipeline essential for achieving global emission reduction targets. Furthermore, it lays the foundation for a standardized training framework to elevate seafarers’ GHG-related competencies worldwide.
